Class Descriptions

On the first Sunday at 12:30 P.M, you will audition for placement with your instructor and ensemble(s). Please visit the Ensemble Audition Information page to find out what is suggested for your performance. Ensemble participation is a central part of daily activity at Cannon Music Camp. All ensembles are conducted by highly qualified professionals who work to achieve the highest standards of group musicianship.

As a comprehensive music camp, Cannon Music Camp offers more than just ensembles and private lessons. We also offer classes that will help you become a more complete and well-rounded musician. Take a look at these overviews of Ensembles and of the Class.

Students may pursue additional interests as time allows, secondary lessons are available as schedules permit (optional, see additional fees).

DROP/ADD forms (with approval from our Dean of Camp) are available for classes, lessons, ensembles. This will begin on the first Monday and will end by the first Wednesday AM.

Music Theory

Each camper will have a theory class. We offer several levels of music theory. From the results of the theory placement assessment taken on the first evening of camp, all campers will be placed into a level that meets them where they are (musically speaking) and helps them grow into a deeper understanding of how music is put together. These classes meet Monday through Friday. (Theory Guide - PDF) We also offer a Jazz Theory class.

Jazz/Rhythm Improvisation

For those participating in one of our jazz ensembles, we offer opportunities to explore improvisation in a separate class. Usually divided between wind and rhythm section players, these classes are structured to help both beginners and more advanced students. These classes meet Monday through Friday.

Voice Class

Voice class is open to all students studying voice privately at CMC. The class meets Monday through Friday, with each week of the class being taught by a different member of the Hayes School of Music voice faculty. Past class topics have included vocal health, repertoire, diction, and dramatic interpretation.
